The recently launched Advanced Nuclear Energy Initiative at the University of Alberta provides support for the growing research and training needs for nuclear fission and fusion energy within Alberta. By focusing on the development and application of advanced nuclear energy technologies, ANEI aims to address critical energy challenges and contribute to the energy transition toward sustainable energy systems regionally and nationally.

Education & Training will provide support for the introduction of small modular reactors into Alberta by establishing graduate specialization in ECE. This specialization will consist of four courses covering nuclear physics, reactor design, radiation, etc.

Research will expand the decades-long experience at the University of Alberta in nuclear fusion research and provide support for the growing interest in nuclear fission research. This initiative will leverage relevant expertise developed in the flagship research centre Future Energy Systems.
