About Advanced Nuclear Energy Initiative (ANEI)
The Advanced Nuclear Energy Initiative (ANEI) responds to the growing research and training needs for nuclear fission energy and nuclear fusion energy.
By focusing on the development and application of advanced nuclear energy technologies, ANEI aims to address critical energy challenges and contribute to the energy transition toward a sustainable energy systems regionally and nationally.
Education & Training
ANEI’s education and training initiatives will start with a graduate specialization in ECE; potentially grow to faculty wide and undergraduate programs.
Research
ANEI’s research is based on the existing research activities in nuclear fission and fusion, leveraging relevant expertise developed in the Future Energy Systems; potentially establishing a Research Centre.
Our Latest News
We are thrilled to announce that the University of Alberta is set to become the new home for nuclear innovation following a $5-million provincial investment. The funding, awarded by the Government of Alberta to the Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation (CSMC), will support a $10-million initiative to commission an unfuelled prototype of a nuclear micro-modular reactor for research and teaching. The unfuelled reactor will be a physical simulator that can produce heat and electricity similar to a fuelled nuclear reactor, but contains no uranium and poses no radiation risks. The three-year project funded through Emissions Reduction Alberta will build capacity and highlight the opportunity for nuclear energy to deliver sustainable, reliable power in Alberta to key
stakeholders.
